Asante Kotoko to resume training on Wed. Feb 19 but maintain boycott of competitions

Asante Kotoko’s first team is set to resume training on Wednesday, February 19, marking their return to the pitch after suspending all football-related activities.

The club halted operations following the tragic death of supporter Francis ‘Nana Pooley’ Frimpong, who was fatally stabbed in Nsoatre during Kotoko’s Ghana Premier League clash with Nsoatreman.

However, after consultations with their medical team, the club has decided to resume training to safeguard the players’ physical and mental well-being.

“After careful consideration and discussions with our medical department, we have been advised that our senior team should resume training from tomorrow to ensure their fitness and overall well-being,” a statement from the club’s management read.

Kotoko emphasized that while they continue to mourn Pooley’s passing, maintaining the squad’s readiness is essential.

However, they reaffirmed that this decision does not indicate a return to active competition.

“We want to make it abundantly clear that resuming training does not alter our stance on footballing activities. Our position remains unchanged; we will not participate in any official matches until meaningful and decisive actions are taken to ensure justice and protect the future of our game,” the statement added.

Over the weekend, Kotoko held a one-week memorial at the Baba Yara Stadium in honour of Pooley.
