The matchday 19 Ghana Premier League fixture between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko at the Nana Kronmansah II Park descended into chaos after a heated confrontation between players from both teams.

Tempers flared as players engaged in an exchange of blows, with Nsoatreman’s left-back, Eric Osei Bonsu, seen stamping on a Kotoko player who was already on the ground.

Amid the melee, referee Mawuli Vormawor, fearing for his safety, fled the scene but later returned to continue officiating the game after calm was somewhat restored.

Tensions were further escalated by sections of the home supporters, who began throwing stones and objects at the Kotoko bench.

In the process, Kotoko’s media officer was struck, and crucial equipment, including a laptop and camera, was damaged.

The chaotic scenes have raised fresh concerns over security at league centers, with many calling on the Ghana Football Association to take swift action to ensure the safety of players, officials, and journalists at league venues.

The aftermath of the match has been overshadowed by disturbing reports indicating that some supporters lost their lives due to the chaos. However, official confirmations are yet to be made.

With the win, Nsoatreman climbed to 14th on the league table with 21 points after 19 games, while Kotoko remained second with 34 points.

As of now, the Ghana Football Association has yet to release a statement on the incident, and both clubs have also remained silent, yet to provide a detailed account of what transpired.

The tragic events have raised renewed concerns over security at league venues, with many calling for swift action to prevent future occurrences.
