Majority Leader of Ghana’s Parliament Mahama Ayariga has made a bold claim that the Ghana Premier League will soon grow to eclipse Europe’s biggest leagues.
The Nation’s flagship league product has in recent years suffered from a mix of poor attendance, substandard infrastructure, the absence of a headline sponsor, hooliganism and competition from European League’s, especially the English Premiership.
The current 2024/2025 season has been suspended indefinitely by the Ghana Football Association following the fatal stabbing of die-hard Asante Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong popularly known as Pooley.
The fan died from his stab wounds after attending a league match between Nsoatreman and Asante Kotoko.
Following his passing, Asante Kotoko have announced their decision to stay away from all football related activity until justice is served.
However, despite the gloom threatening to ruin the league season, The Majority leader is confident that as part of the National Democratic Congress’ 24-hour Economy Policy, the local league and football will thrive again.
“Football is going to be a major enabler of the 24 hour economy and very soon our local league will replace the European Leagues.”
He said on the floor of Parliament during the presentation of a paper on hooliganism and violence in Ghana Football.
