Asante Kotoko marked their return to the Ghana Premier League with a convincing 2-0 victory against bottom-side Legon Cities at the Baba Yara Stadium.

The top-flight competition had been suspended for 33 days following the tragic death of Kotoko fan Francis Frimpong Pooley, attributed to hooliganism, with his funeral held on March 6, 2025.

In a touching tribute, Kotoko players held a banner reading “forever in our heart” before kickoff to honor the late supporter.

The Porcupines started the match dominantly and took the lead in the 27th minute when defender Patrick Asiedu fired a powerful low strike from the edge of the box into the bottom left corner.

The hosts secured their victory late in the game, doubling their advantage in the 85th minute. Kyei Baffour’s goal-bound shot struck the arm of Legon Cities defender Isaac Quargraine, leading to a penalty.

Forward Kwame Opoku calmly converted the spot-kick, sealing a comfortable win for Kotoko.

Under the guidance of coach Prosper Narteh Ogum, Kotoko now sit atop the league standings with 37 points. Their next challenge will be a match against FC Samartex.

Meanwhile, Legon Cities, languishing in 17th place with 17 points, will face Berekum Chelsea in their upcoming fixture.
