Harry Maguire turned unlikely hero as Manchester United triumphed in a sensational nine-goal Europa League clash against Lyon, booking their place in the semi-finals.

In a game full of twists, drama, and late goals, it was Maguire’s stunning finish that sealed a 5-4 victory for the Red Devils in one of the competition’s most memorable nights.

Lyon struck first through Corentin Tolisso, before Nicolás Tagliafico doubled the French side’s lead, leaving United chasing the tie. But the visitors hit back in style; Bruno Fernandes converted a crucial penalty to breathe life into United’s hopes.

Stoppage time turned into chaos, with Rayan Cherki and Alexandre Lacazette both finding the net for Lyon in quick succession. But United refused to go down quietly as youngster Kobbie Mainoo levelled the match with a sharp striker’s finish.

Bruno Fernandes stepped up again, orchestrating attacks, and it was captain Harry Maguire who rose to the occasion; latching onto a loose ball in the box and smashing home the winner in dramatic fashion.

What looked like an early exit turned into a statement comeback for Ruben Amorim’s men, who now advance to face Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League semi-finals.
