Liverpool’s stellar first season under Arne Slot: A new chapter unfolds

As Liverpool FC stands on the verge of clinching the Premier League title, just a single point away from securing their 20th league triumph, the football world is witnessing a remarkable transformation under their new manager, Arne Slot.

What many anticipated to be a season of transition has turned into a campaign of sheer brilliance. With an impressive 26-game unbeaten streak, only two losses, and a potential 93-point finish, Slot’s team has redefined dominance in what is arguably the most competitive Premier League season ever.

*An Unprecedented Unbeaten Run and Title Pursuit*

Liverpool’s 26-game unbeaten run in the league is a milestone that even Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City haven’t achieved in a single season. Should they win their remaining matches, they will finish with 93 points—a figure Arsenal have never touched in their history.

This is a squad many predicted would finish third or lower at the season’s outset, yet they have accumulated more points than Manchester United and Tottenham combined. Let that sink in.

*Debunking the “Down Year” Narrative*

Some critics have labeled this a “down year” for the Premier League, but this perspective undermines Liverpool’s accomplishments. The 2024-25 season has been the most fiercely contested in recent memory, with mid-table and European contenders elevating their game. Bournemouth, Fulham, Aston Villa, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest are no longer easy opponents, while Crystal Palace and Wolves have found their stride.

Arsenal and Manchester City haven’t faltered due to poor form—they’ve dropped points because the league is more competitive than ever. Every match is a challenge, and Liverpool have navigated this gauntlet with just two losses. This isn’t luck; it’s sheer excellence.

Even more indicative of the league’s quality is the fact that Spurs and Manchester United, currently in 14th and 15th places, are still in the Europa League semi-finals. This speaks volumes about the Premier League’s depth. Liverpool’s ability to clinch the title amidst such fierce competition is a testament to their resilience, tactical acumen, and squad depth.

*Arne Slot’s Remarkable First Season*

When Arne Slot succeeded Jürgen Klopp, he took over a team that had finished third and faded in the previous season. Many expected a period of adjustment, but Slot has worked miracles. Despite missing out on his primary targets—Zubimendi and Gordon—and making only one significant signing in Federico Chiesa (who he rarely used), Slot has revitalized this Liverpool side.

He transformed Ryan Gravenberch, a player who saw limited action under Klopp, into one of the league’s top defensive midfielders. His tactical adaptability and ability to maximize his squad’s potential have been nothing short of masterful.

For Slot to win the league in his debut season is a monumental achievement. Most Liverpool fans and pundits, including Gary Neville, had them pegged for a finish outside the top four. This overachievement solidifies Slot’s status as one of the most promising managerial talents in global football.

Liverpool’s success this season is just the beginning. With 4-5 new signings rumored to arrive this summer, including potential targets like Kerkez, Huijsen, Ekitike, and even Julian Álvarez or Alexander Isak, the Reds could reach new heights.

If they retain the title next season, Slot’s legacy will be cemented instantly. For diehard fans, the prospect of Liverpool surpassing Manchester United’s record of 20 titles is genuinely titillating.

*Why Arsenal and City’s Struggles Don’t Undermine Liverpool’s Success*

While it’s true that Arsenal and Manchester City haven’t been at their best this season, this doesn’t detract from Liverpool’s achievement.

Arsenal have been beset by injuries and misfortune, but Liverpool have faced their own challenges. They’ve operated without a consistent striker for much of the season, with Darwin Núñez struggling for form and Diogo Jota frequently injured.

Yet, they’ve still managed to defeat elite European sides like Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League group stage and came close to eliminating PSG.

The Premier League this season is unforgiving, and Liverpool have handled it better than anyone. The fact that mid-table clubs are now so competitive, and teams like United and Spurs are still excelling in Europe, underscores the league’s quality. Liverpool’s ability to rise above this chaos is a testament to their excellence.

*Key Players Stepping Up*

Alexis Mac Allister has been a revelation, excelling in multiple midfield roles and proving to be one of the league’s most complete players. His ability to resist the press, create opportunities, and contribute physically has been crucial.

Mohamed Salah continues to deliver when it matters, while Luis Díaz has provided moments of brilliance and Cody Gakpo showed significant improvement before his injury. The squad’s depth and individual brilliance have been pivotal to their success.

*Summer Reinforcements: Building for the Future*

With rumored signings like Kerkez, Huijsen, and Ekitike, Liverpool are poised to strengthen further. If Jota and Núñez depart, they could target another winger, with past links to Anthony Gordon and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

The potential arrival of Julian Álvarez or Alexander Isak would add even more firepower. With Virgil van Dijk and Salah committing their futures to the club, the Reds are assembling a squad capable of sustained dominance.

*Conclusion: A New Era of Excellence*

Liverpool’s first season under Arne Slot has been nothing short of extraordinary. They’ve defied expectations, overcome challenges, and delivered a title-winning campaign in the most competitive Premier League season ever.

Slot’s tactical brilliance, the squad’s resilience, and the club’s astute recruitment have laid the foundation for a new era of dominance. As Liverpool stand on the brink of history, the future looks brighter than ever. For rival fans, it’s a daunting prospect. For Liverpool fans, it’s a dream realized.
