Southampton made Premier League history for all the wrong reasons, suffering the earliest relegation in the league’s history after a 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. Brennan Johnson’s first-half double, along with a late penalty from Mathys Tel, sealed the Saints’ fate, sending them back to the Championship with seven games still to play.

The Wales forward opened the scoring in the 13th minute, converting Djed Spence’s low cross, before adding a second three minutes before halftime with a clever finish from James Maddison’s header. Despite a late goal from Mateus Fernandes in the 90th minute, Southampton’s hopes of survival were dashed when Tel’s added-time penalty, following a foul on Johnson, ensured their relegation.

The match was played in a subdued atmosphere at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with fans voicing their frustrations over chairman Daniel Levy and manager Ange Postecoglou. But Spurs quickly settled into the game, with Johnson and Lucas Bergvall troubling the Saints’ defence. Southampton did have their moments, notably when Kamaldeen Sulemana’s effort was deflected onto the post by Pedro Porro.

Tottenham’s win lifted them to 13th in the table, while Southampton, stuck at the bottom with just 10 points, are now left facing a battle to avoid setting a new record for the fewest points in Premier League history.
