Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham has criticised Marcus Rashford’s reported interest in a move to Barcelona, insisting the forward hasn’t earned it based on recent form and effort.

Reports in recent weeks suggest the Spanish giants are eyeing a potential move for Rashford, with the player himself said to be open to the switch.

But Sheringham, who won the treble with United in 1999, says Rashford has fallen short of the standards expected of players at that level.

If you assess where he’s at as a professional footballer, you strive very hard as a youngster to get to the very top; to play for clubs like Manchester United

When you’re there, you appreciate it. You don’t throw it away and say, ‘I want to leave.’

The Manchester United legend described Rashford’s reported stance as disappointing, especially given what it means to represent a club of United’s stature.

I find the whole episode very soul-destroying; for the way I was, the way we were back in the day

It’s a privilege to play for a club like United, and hearing someone say they want out and only want to go to Barcelona just doesn’t sit right.

Sheringham didn’t mince words when asked about the potential transfer.

I hope Rashford doesn’t get the move he’s hankering for. If you’re going from Manchester United to Barcelona, that’s a step up; but he doesn’t deserve it.

You can’t deserve it if you haven’t put the hard work in.

Rashford has come under criticism in recent months for inconsistent performances at club level, with growing scrutiny over his long-term role at Old Trafford.

The club has asked the player to train away from the entire squad and will miss the pre season tour in the U.S.A
