Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min has confirmed he will leave the club this summer, ending a decade-long spell in North London that saw him rise from a promising winger to one of the most beloved figures in Premier League history.

The 33-year-old South Korean forward made the announcement while speaking to the media in Seoul, where Spurs are currently based for their pre-season tour.

Son is expected to captain the side one final time in a friendly against Newcastle United on Sunday ; potentially bringing down the curtain on his Spurs career in front of his home fans.

Son joined Tottenham from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and went on to score 173 goals in 454 appearances, becoming one of the club’s most consistent and iconic performers.

His crowning moment came in May 2025, when he captained the team to victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final, ending Spurs’ 17-year trophy drought.

Now, he is in advanced talks with MLS side Los Angeles FC, despite still having a contract with Spurs until 2026.

This is the most difficult decision of my career,” Son admitted during the press conference. “I arrived in London as a young boy who didn’t speak English. I leave as a grown man, proud of what I’ve achieved with this club.

New Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank, who took over from Ange Postecoglou in June, praised Son’s legacy at the club.

Sonny is a true Spurs legend ; not just for what he did on the pitch, but for the way he carried himself. If Sunday’s game is his last, there’s no better stage for it than in his home country.

While Spurs are also scheduled to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on 13 August, it’s uncertain whether Son will still be part of the squad by then.
