The world of sports continues to grapple with racism as more black athletes across several disciplines continue to be subjected to this terrible treatment.

In the wake of racist acts towards football players Antoine Semenyo and Mathys Tel, point guard Dennis Schroder got racially abused at a basketball game between Germany and Lithuania in the European Championships.

The incident took place at half time in Germany’s 107-88 win over Lithuania in Finland while Schroder and the rest of the German team walked off the court for recess. Schroder registered 26 points and six assists in 31 minutes in the win.

Monkey noises were heard from fans gathered at the Lithuania section in the arena and basketball world governing body FIBA has since banned a fan involved in the incident and Schroder has condemned the racist act.

“You can insult me, do whatever you want, but monkey noises are not acceptable. Racism simply does not belong in this sport” per DW.

Schroder, who was born to a German father and a Gambian mother in Germany, has played in the NBA for 12 seasons and recently signed a three year deal with the Sacramento Kings. Germany take on Great Britain on Monday, September 1.
