Legendary Dutch striker Marco Van Basten has blasted the performance of midfielder Frenkie De Jong describing his play as that of a postman.

He said this after the Netherlands’ 4-0 win over Finland in Europe’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers to lead Group G with 16 points three ahead of second ranked Poland.

De Jong featured in the game but the FC Barcelona player’s performance didn’t impress Van Basten who called on De Jong to move the ball faster.

“We expected Frenkie [De Jong] to speed up the game, but he didn’t. I found that disappointing. It was similar to postman football. De Jong’s role is to move the ball quickly from back to front, but he barely did that.”

“It’s a shame because he has the vision and qualities to do it. Pedri plays faster and takes more risks in attack; that’s what you expect from Frenkie” he said to Ziggo Sport.

Memphis Depay scored and had two assists in the win to become the Netherlands all time leader in assists.
