Spanish La Liga president Javier Tebas has slammed the cancellation of a proposed game between FC Barcelona and Villarreal at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami describing the move as one that lacks ambition but one that is gripped by fear.
He gave this damning verdict via a statement on X (formerly Twitter) after serious resistence from La Liga players and officials ended in the cancellation of the league matchup between Barcelona and Villarreal in December.
The game was cancelled over what was reported as “uncertainty that has arisen in Spain over the past few weeks” and Javier Tebas was very unhappy with the move.
“Today, Spanish football has lost an opportunity to advance, project itself globally, and strengthen its future. I want to thank Villarreal CF and FC Barcelona for their commitment and generosity in being part of a project that only sought the growth of our competition.”
“La Liga will continue working, with rigour and conviction, to keep Spanish football competitive… Spanish football deserves to look to the future with ambition, not fear. We will keep trying” Tebas wrote.
