A pair of Jamaica National Men’s Football Team members has registered its displeasure over the potential addition of Mason Greenwood to the team with the duo claiming that it would be “unfair” to do so.

Queens Park Rangers midfielder Isaac Hayden and Charlton Athletic defender Amari’i Bell registered their displeasure over the situation.

Olympique Marseille forward Greenwood recently received his Jamaican passport that allows him to switch from England- the country of his birth- to play for Jamaica- the country of his grandparents.

Despite making an appearance for England at the senior level, Greenwood is eligible to switch and compete in the Intercontinental Playoffs as Jamaica bids to qualify to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Jamaica take on New Caledonia with the winner taking on Democratic Republic of Congo in March, 2026 but Bell and Hayden believe it would be unfair to include Greenwood at this juncture after his absence in previous qualification games.

“[The JFF-Jamaican Football Federation] are obsessed with names and trying to recruit more players. If a player is not willing to commit for the last round of qualifying, unless they’re injured, I do not see why they should be joining the group in March or at the end of the season if we qualify’. There is no way that should be allowed to happen” Hayden said to ESPN.

“Many of us for years have put our blood, sweat and tears into playing for the nation, with a lot of things happening in the background.”

“We’ve had to deal with all that. It wouldn’t seem fair to people who have been through that whole process and will never get another chance to play at a World Cup. It’s a bit controversial” Bell added per ESPN.

Greenwood has been in brilliant form registering 10 goals and three assists in 12 French Ligue 1 games so far this season.
