Former Ghana captain André Ayew has secured a return to European football after joining Dutch Eredivisie side NAC Breda on a short-term deal as the club battles to avoid relegation.

The 36-year-old French-born Ghanaian forward has signed a contract until the end of the current season, with NAC holding an option to extend the deal for an additional year.

Ayew, who has been without a club since leaving Le Havre at the end of the 2024/25 season, had turned down several lucrative offers in recent months while waiting for the right project.

During the break, the former Black Stars skipper maintained his fitness at Nania FC, the Ghana-based club owned by his father and African football legend Abédi Pelé.

With over 120 caps and 24 goals for Ghana, Ayew brings a wealth of experience to the Breda-based club, having featured prominently for Olympique de Marseille, Swansea City, West Ham United, and clubs in Turkey.

Across top European leagues and competitions, he has made close to 600 career appearances, scoring more than 160 goals.

Speaking after completing the move, Ayew highlighted the challenge ahead:

“I really enjoy challenges, both personally and as part of a team. I find that here at NAC. Staying in the Eredivisie is the only thing that matters right now. The mental aspect is crucial, and together with our supporters, we must fight this battle head-on.

NAC Technical Director Peter Maas believes Ayew’s experience could prove decisive in their survival bid:

“André is eager to help NAC. That was clear from our conversations. He’s been through tough moments in his career and remains a true professional. We believe his experience and qualities can make a real difference.”

Ayew joins the squad of head coach Carl Hoefkens immediately, with NAC set to resume training on January 2 at the BO Infra Training Complex in Zundert.
