Head coach of Morocco’s National Men’s Football Team, Walid Regragui, has stated that calls for European referees to officiate AFCON games are wrong.
He said this ahead of Morocco’s game against Senegal in the 2025 AFCON final with the both nations aiming to win the title for the second time.
Morocco are competing in the final for the first time since 2004 while Senegal won its first AFCON in 2021 and have registered serious concerns over hotel accommodation and security for the team ahead of the final on Sunday, January 18.

“There are always complaints about refereeing both before and after games. It might be time for everyone to sit down around a table and start from a clean slate. If the idea is to go for European referees, the we’re fighting the wrong battle” Regragui said at a presser.
