Ashanti Regional Circles Chairman of Asante Kotoko, Alex Manu, has described the resignation of former head coach Abdul Karim Zito as “very painful,” following the club’s recent struggles.
Zito stepped down on Monday, February 9, after Kotoko’s defeat to Aduana FC in the ongoing MTN FA Cup, bringing an abrupt end to a tenure that had begun with significant promise.
Speaking to Citi Sports, Manu admitted the decision was difficult for supporters but praised the coach’s professionalism despite the team’s inconsistent form.
Asante Kotoko Head coach, Abdul Karim Zito
“It’s very painful. You know, the club has been going through a lot of difficult times. We hardly raised three to four consecutive games. It has been ups and downs. Before, we were thinking behind the box, how to find the actual problem that is facing the team.
But, you know, the coach has acted professionally. That’s what I would say. The coach has acted very professionally.

Kotoko began the season strongly, enjoying an 11-match unbeaten run, but their momentum slowed after a defeat to Basake Holy Stars in November. In their last five matches, the Porcupine Warriors have managed only one victory, a run that intensified pressure on the technical team.
Manu believes Zito would have done everything within his power to turn results around before eventually deciding to step aside.
Maybe he might have tried his best to notice what is wrong with the team, but he hasn’t been able to do so. So you talk twice. Just say, enough is enough. If I have the problem, I know for sure after I have left the club, the problem will be solved. If I don’t have the problem, we’ll continue again. We’ll also try to see if we can see that problem.

Despite the disappointment, the supporters’ leader urged unity between fans and management as the club prepares for its next chapter.
I would take it in good faith, because in football, I mean, coaches are to be fired. So it’s okay with me. Once it’s okay with the management, it’s okay with me. We’re always hand in hand with the management.
