Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered a major setback after a humiliating 5-1 defeat to Austria national football team in an international friendly played in Vienna.

The Black Stars were outclassed at the Ernst Happel Stadium, as Otto Addo’s side struggled to cope with the intensity and clinical finishing of their European opponents.

Coach Otto Addo made several bold calls with his starting lineup, handing the goalkeeping role to Lawrence Ati-Zigi, while Thomas Partey anchored the midfield alongside Kwasi Sibo. In attack, Jordan Ayew, Antoine Semenyo and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku were tasked with leading the charge.

Ghana toothless attack

Ghana started brightly, showing composure in possession and linking play effectively in the opening exchanges. However, the game turned on a controversial moment when Austria were awarded a penalty after a handball by Jonas Adjetey. Marcel Sabitzer stepped up and calmly converted to give the hosts the lead.

Despite going behind, the Black Stars responded with some attacking intent but lacked the cutting edge in the final third. Prince Adu Kwabena found space behind the Austrian defense on multiple occasions but failed to test the goalkeeper, while Semenyo also missed a promising chance.

Ghana nearly went into halftime just one goal down, thanks to a brilliant save from Ati-Zigi, but the second half told a different story.

Austria determined attack

Austria returned with ruthless efficiency. Michael Gregoritsch doubled the lead early after the break, before Stefan Posch made it 3-0, capitalizing on poor defensive marking.

The introduction of fresh legs, including debutants Patric Pfeiffer and Marvin Senaya, did little to change the momentum. Ghana did manage a consolation goal in the 76th minute when Jordan Ayew produced a moment of quality to pull one back after being set up by Ibrahim Sulemana.

But any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished. Austria responded almost immediately, with Carney Chukwuemeka restoring the three-goal cushion, once again assisted by the influential Sabitzer.

The hosts sealed a comprehensive victory in stoppage time, capping off a dominant performance that exposed Ghana’s defensive frailties and lack of cohesion.

For Addo and his technical team, this result raises serious concerns ahead of the World Cup. While the match was intended as a preparatory test, it instead highlighted the gap between the Black Stars and top European opposition.

With another high-profile friendly against Germany looming, Ghana must respond quickly  or risk heading into the global tournament with more questions than answers.
