The 2026 edition of the HONDA Football Championship officially kicked off on Tuesday, March 24, with a colorful opening ceremony attended by key dignitaries.
The Mayor of Tamale, Alhaji Abubakari Adam Takoro, performed the ceremonial kickoff alongside Francis Lew-Dibahi, Deputy Manager at Honda Motor Southern Africa.
Their presence highlighted the significance of the tournament in promoting sports development, youth participation, and community pride in the region.

Also in attendance were Idrisu Mohammed, a board member of the National Sports Authority, Jonah Yakubu, and Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko of the Ghana University Sports Association, all demonstrating strong institutional backing for the competition.

The tournament will run from March 24 to March 28, 2026, featuring eight universities: University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA), Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU), Tamale Technical University (TaTU), University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), University of Ghana (UG), University of Development Studies (UDS), University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), and University for Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS).
All matches will be played at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, with teams competing for top honors and a grand prize of GH₵25,000.
The competition is powered by Honda in partnership with Overseas Union Ltd, the sole distributors of Honda Motorcycles in Ghana, and is produced by RITE Sports Services.
