The Black Queens  have climbed to 59th in the world in the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings , marking a significant rise from their previous position of 62nd.

On the continental stage, Ghana remain firmly 3rd in Africa, trailing only powerhouses:

  • Nigeria women’s national football team (1st)
  • South Africa women’s national football team (2nd)

This latest jump reflects a team on the rise one steadily rebuilding its reputation on the global stage.

1. WAFCON Bronze Boost

Ghana’s resurgence is largely tied to their impressive performance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where they secured a bronze medal in Morocco. That achievement delivered a crucial boost in ranking points and confidence.

2. Dominant Qualification Campaign

The Black Queens confirmed their place at the next WAFCON with a commanding 7–0 aggregate victory over Egypt women’s national football team, underlining their attacking strength and tactical discipline.

3. Tactical Evolution Under New Leadership

Under the guidance of Kim Björkegren

the team has undergone a tactical transformation focusing on:

  • Better final-third connections
  • Increased chance creation
  • More structured game management

Participation in global tournaments like the Pink Ladies Cup has sharpened the team’s edge. Notably, Ghana recorded:

  • A 4–0 win over Russia women’s national football team
  • A convincing victory against Hong Kong women’s national football team

These matches provided valuable experience against non-African opposition an important step in global competitiveness.

The current squad reflects a strategic mix:

  • 80% overseas-based professionals
  • Emerging domestic talents from Ghana’s Women’s Premier League

This balance has improved depth, flexibility, and competition for places within the team.

A renewed focus on sports psychology has also played a role. The technical team is working to build a squad that is:

  • Resilient under pressure
  • Fearless in big moments
  • Mentally prepared for tournament football

Historical Context: A Return Toward the Top

While 59th marks their best ranking since 2019, the Black Queens are still chasing their all-time peak:

All-Time Highest 42nd June 2008
Current Ranking 59th April 2026
Recent Low 67th August 2025

The upcoming WAFCON set to take place in Morocco will be pivotal.

A deep run (especially reaching the semi-finals) could:

  • Push Ghana closer to their historic ranking peak
  • Strengthen their position globally
  • Boost qualification hopes for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup

For the Black Queens , this is more than just a ranking improvement ; it’s a statement of intent.

After years of inconsistency, Ghana’s women’s team is rising again, combining tactical evolution, international exposure, and mental strength.
