Real Madrid stunned by Mallorca in costly 2-1 defeat

Real Madrid suffered a 2-1 damaging defeat to RCD Mallorca, with a stoppage-time winner sealing a dramatic upset in the La Liga title race. Mallorca took the lead just before half-time through Manu Morlanes, who finished from close range after a defensive lapse to make it 1-0 in the 41st minute.

Real Madrid pushed hard for a response and eventually found it late on. Éder Militão rose to head home the equaliser in the 88th minute, seemingly rescuing a point for the visitors.

But Mallorca had the final word. Deep into stoppage time, Vedat Muriqi finished off a counterattack in the 90+2 minute to seal a stunning 2-1 victory. The stats highlight how frustrating this result will be for Real Madrid.

They controlled 64 per cent possession, had six shots on target, and forced five saves. Mallorca, by contrast, managed just two shots on target but scored twice.

Madrid’s goalkeeper was not compelled into a single save, yet they still conceded twice, exposing costly lapses at crucial moments. It was a classic case of control without a decisive edge. This is a significant blow.

Real Madrid had the chance to stay level at the top, but instead dropped points against a side fighting near the bottom. The defeat hands the advantage to their rivals, Barcelona, and ramps up the pressure as the final stretch approaches.

At this stage of the season, efficiency wins titles, not possession. Mallorca demonstrated that. Madrid will have to respond swiftly or risk seeing the title slip away.
