Several notable names have been left out of Carlos Queiroz’s 28-man squad for Ghana’s final World Cup preparations.
Midfielder Majeed Ashimeru, forwards Felix Afena-Gyan and Joseph Paintsil, defender Derrick Köhn, midfielder Kwasi Sibo, and Medeama SC star Salim Adams were all omitted from the squad announced by the Portuguese coach.

The biggest surprises are Ashimeru and Afena-Gyan, who were both part of Ghana’s squad for the recent friendly against Mexico.
Ashimeru enjoyed another strong season with Anderlecht in Belgium, making more than 20 league appearances despite injury setbacks. Afena-Gyan also played an important role for Turkish side Amedspor during its promotion push.

Paintsil’s absence will also spark debate after the winger maintained impressive form for LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer, recording double-digit goal involvements this season.

Derrick Köhn, one of Ghana’s regular left-backs in recent years, also misses out despite consistent performances in Europe.

Kwasi Sibo is another notable omission after helping Real Oviedo secure promotion to La Liga in Spain. The midfielder made more than 35 appearances and was one of the club’s most dependable players.

Salim Adams, who impressed for Medeama SC in the Ghana Premier League, scored 11 league goals from midfield this season but failed to earn a recall.

Queiroz’s squad instead features a mix of experienced players, returning faces, and emerging talents as Ghana steps up preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
