FIFA has launched a disciplinary investigation into Argentina following the confrontations that erupted after the final whistle of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium.

The world governing body confirmed that its disciplinary committee has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to examine the incidents that occurred after Argentina’s 1-0 defeat to Spain.

Players and officials could face sanctions

Any Argentina player or member of the coaching staff found to have breached FIFA’s disciplinary code could face suspensions, while the Argentine Football Association (AFA) could also be subject to financial penalties.

Following Spain’s victory, several Argentina players and members of the backroom staff became involved in confrontations as Spain celebrated winning the World Cup.

Defenders Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes, Thiago Almada, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala were all reported to have been involved in the post-match incidents.

Paredes red card removed

Initial reports suggested referee Slavko Vinčić had shown Leandro Paredes a red card after an altercation involving Spain defender Eric García.

However, FIFA later confirmed that the dismissal was removed from the official record and that no disciplinary action was taken against Paredes during the match.

Argentina had already finished the final with 10 men after Enzo Fernández was sent off for a second yellow card during second-half stoppage time.

Previous disciplinary matter also under review

The latest investigation comes after FIFA had already begun disciplinary proceedings involving Argentina following their 2-1 semi-final victory over England.

The governing body is examining the actions of Argentina’s players after they displayed a banner supporting their country’s claim over the Falkland Islands during the post-match celebrations.

FIFA’s disciplinary committee will now assess both matters before deciding whether any sporting or financial sanctions should be imposed on the players involved or on the Argentine Football Association.
