Former Chelsea midfielder Oscar has revealed that he never spent any of the salary he earned during his time playing in China, despite reportedly earning one of the biggest contracts in world football.
The Brazilian joined Shanghai Port FC (then known as Shanghai SIPG) from Chelsea FC in 2017 in a deal worth around £60 million, with reported wages of approximately £400,000 per week.
The move saw Oscar become one of the highest-paid players in football, with reports suggesting he earned between £150 million and £175 million during his seven-year spell in China.
However, the former Brazil international says he took a disciplined approach to managing his wealth, placing his entire salary into a separate account and relying on match bonuses to support himself and his family.
“I put my entire salary into a separate account and never touched it once. My family and I lived off the match bonuses because they were already huge.”
During his time in China, Oscar enjoyed major success, helping Shanghai Port win three league titles and scoring 77 goals before eventually returning to Brazil.
He later joined São Paulo FC before retiring from football in 2026 after a heart-related issue.
