President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has praised the Black Stars for their performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing their campaign as a positive step for the national team and the country.

Ghana ended their World Cup journey with a 24th-place finish, emerging as the fifth-best African team at the tournament.

The Black Stars progressed from Group L but were eliminated in the Round of 32 after a 1-0 defeat to Colombia at Kansas City Stadium.

Their tournament results included a 1-0 victory over Panama, a goalless draw against England and a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in the group stage before the narrow loss to Colombia in the knockout round.

Speaking about the team’s performance, President Mahama acknowledged the progress made by the Black Stars, despite doubts over their chances before the tournament.

“The Black Stars performed admirably at the recent tournament despite many predictions that they would not progress beyond the group stage. They exceeded expectations by advancing to the Round of 32, demonstrating determination, resilience and the quality that exists within the team.”

The President also called for continuity, urging Ghana to maintain the current group of players and continue supporting the technical team to build a stronger side for future competitions.

“If we maintain this group of players and continue supporting the technical team, I believe we can build a stronger national team capable of competing successfully in future AFCON and FIFA World Cup tournaments.”

Mahama’s comments come as Ghana begins preparations for future major tournaments such as the 2027 AFCON, with the focus now on building on the experience gained from the 2026 World Cup campaign.
