Administrator of the Ghana Sports Fund, Dr. David Kofi Wuaku, has reiterated that the Fund was established to support the development of all sporting disciplines in Ghana, and not football alone.

Established in December 2025 under Act 1159, the Ghana Sports Fund is a permanent multi-source financing mechanism designed to provide sustainable funding for sports development while reducing the country’s reliance on emergency fundraising ahead of major international competitions.

Speaking to Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News, Dr. Wuaku acknowledged football’s dominant position but stressed that the Fund has a broader mandate to serve every registered sports federation.

“I think sometimes the analysis we do is just at the face of it. We talk about how much football takes, but we don’t talk about how much football brings. The reality is football is big. It’s big globally and everybody accepts that,” he said.

He explained that while football naturally attracts greater attention and resources because of its commercial appeal, the Sports Fund is developing a transparent distribution model that will ensure every federation benefits.

“With the Sports Fund, we are coming out with an acceptable formula for distributing our funds and support to all sports, not only football. In fact, some sports that are not even in existence, we have a mandate to create and develop them.”

Dr. Wuaku said the Fund is considering the needs of all 58 registered sports federations, adding that football will be treated as just one of the many federations eligible for support.

“We are looking at all the 58 or so registered federations. We take football as just one federation. The others are there, and we will come out with a formula that is acceptable and beneficial to all of them,” he stated.

The Sports Fund administrator also expressed confidence that Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams will honour his commitment to channel part of Ghana’s earnings from the 2026 FIFA World Cup into the Fund.

“It has not happened yet, but I trust him. I know it will be done. We have just returned from the World Cup and the accounts have not been fully balanced yet, so we are going through the necessary processes. Even today, I met with some stakeholders regarding that, so the process is ongoing,” he added.

The Ghana Sports Fund is expected to become a key pillar in financing sports development, athlete preparation and federation activities across the country as it begins full operations.
