Cristian Romero has bid an emotional farewell to Tottenham Hotspur as he prepares to complete his move to Atletico Madrid after five years in north London.

The Argentina international is set to join the Spanish club after Tottenham agreed a deal worth around £34m for the 28-year-old.

Romero joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021 and went on to make 156 appearances for the club, becoming a key figure in their defence and later being named captain.

His time at Spurs reached its high point in 2025 when he helped the club win the Europa League — their first major trophy since 2008. Romero was also named Player of the Season for the competition by UEFA.

However, his five-year spell was not without controversy. Romero faced criticism during his final season, including over injuries, disciplinary issues and his commitment to the club during a difficult campaign.

In his farewell message, the Argentine acknowledged his shortcomings but insisted he always gave everything for the Tottenham shirt.

“I know I wasn’t perfect,” Romero said.

“But one thing gives me peace: I always gave everything. I defended this shirt with pride and with all my heart.”

Romero reflected on the dream he had when he first arrived at Tottenham ;  to leave his mark on the club’s history.

“When I arrived, I had a clear dream: to leave my name in this club’s history,” he said.

“I knew the only way was through hard work, sacrifice and achieving something that had seemed so difficult for so long: lifting a trophy again. And we did it.”

The defender also thanked Tottenham supporters, teammates, coaches and staff for their role in his journey.

“I’m leaving the club, but a part of my heart will always remain here,” Romero added.

“Once I was one of you. Today, I leave as one of you forever.”

Romero’s departure brings an end to a Tottenham spell that saw him develop into one of the club’s most influential defenders and help deliver a long-awaited European trophy.

He will now begin a new chapter at Atletico Madrid, where he is expected to become an important part of Diego Simeone’s defence. The Spanish club have agreed a deal worth around €40m including add-ons.
