Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho says Spain midfielder Rodri had doubts about joining the club despite receiving an “important offer”.
Mourinho made the comments in an interview with Spanish television station El Chiringuito after Rodri completed his move to Real Madrid’s rivals, Barcelona, on a four-year deal.
Rodri joined Barcelona from Manchester City after helping Spain win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he was named the tournament’s best player.
Real Madrid had reportedly been the leading contenders to sign the midfielder, but Barcelona eventually secured his signature.
“I spoke with [Rodri] a couple of times. The club made him an important offer.”
“Rodri had doubts, he doubted, and I think what happened is that the doubts Rodri had, gave me doubts.”
“He’s an extraordinary player but I think Real Madrid are so big that we can’t have players who think twice. That’s the concept” Mourinho said.
