Alexander Isak scored the only goal as Liverpool edged Bournemouth 1-0 at the Vitality Stadium to spoil Andoni Iraola’s return to his former club.

Isak settled a tense contest shortly after the hour mark, turning home Cody Gakpo’s cross after a slight deflection off Florian Wirtz.

The result came despite Liverpool struggling for long periods, particularly in the first half, as Bournemouth created the better chances.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher criticised Liverpool’s performance during the opening period, saying Bournemouth’s dominance had left Iraola wondering how his side had not taken the lead.

“Iraola probably cannot believe how lethargic Liverpool look,” Carragher said on co-commentary.

Bournemouth were unable to make their pressure count, with Evanilson coming closest to breaking the deadlock.

The striker met Marcus Tavernier’s cross with a clever near-post flick, but Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson reacted brilliantly to keep the effort out, using his hand to prevent the ball from finding the net.

Liverpool then made Bournemouth pay for their missed opportunities when Isak struck after the hour mark.

The victory gives Liverpool their second Premier League win of the season and sends them into the international break in sixth place.

Bournemouth, meanwhile, remain without a league victory under Marco Rose and sit level on points with Coventry in 17th place.
