Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams says some service providers engaged for the 2023 African Games are still awaiting payment because of alleged irregularities and fraud identified in the Auditor-General’s report.
Adams disclosed this when he appeared before Parliament’s Youth and Sports Committee, which is investigating the expenditure and management of funds for the Games.
The 13th African Games were held in Accra from March 8 to 23, 2024, with the event reportedly costing about $250 million.
According to Adams, payments to some service providers have been put on hold pending the completion of the audit process and authorisation from the Ministry of Finance.
“Some service providers have not been paid because the auditing process has to be completed before the Ministry of Finance can give authorization. We have not made any payment,” he said.
Kofi Adams said the Ministry would continue to rely on the Auditor-General’s findings until the issues raised in the report are resolved.
The committee is examining the expenditure and procurement processes surrounding the Games as part of its ongoing inquiry.
