Upper East Regional Minister Akamugri Donatus Atanga says construction of the Bolgatanga Sports Stadium is expected to begin before the end of 2026, following assurances from the government.
Speaking to Citi Sports, Atanga said a team is expected to visit the region this month to assess the site ahead of construction.
The proposed multi-purpose complex will cater for several sporting disciplines, including football, athletics, boxing, basketball, volleyball and indoor games.

Planned facilities include a main football pitch, a training pitch, athletics tracks, basketball and volleyball courts, a swimming pool, high-jump and long-jump facilities, and conference facilities.
The project forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s plan to improve sports infrastructure nationwide, with funding allocated in the 2026 national budget for the construction of 10 new stadia.
Atanga said the stadium would provide recreational opportunities for young people, create jobs and attract investment to the Upper East Region.
“Sporting activities today are no longer just about entertainment. They are also a source of employment and an opportunity for investors to come and invest,” he told Citi Sports.
He expressed gratitude to the government for including the Upper East Region among the beneficiaries of the proposed stadium projects. He added that the site assessment would take place before construction begins.
Atanga also urged residents to use the facility, once completed, to develop sporting talent and support the region’s growth.
“We are hopeful, and the people of the Upper East Region are grateful to President John Dramani Mahama and his government for attending to us. When these facilities are provided, people should not use them for any other purpose apart from promoting their talents to become successful citizens who can help develop the region further,” he said.
