Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has described his three-match FIFA suspension as an “honour” following the Pharaohs’ controversial 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 60-year-old tactician responded defiantly to the disciplinary decision, insisting that he was leaving the matter in God’s hands.
“The decision to suspend me by FIFA is an honour for me. I leave matters to God Almighty, and we will see what will happen in the future,” Hassan told Yalla Kora
FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee also handed a three-match suspension to Egypt team director Ibrahim Hassan, Hossam’s twin brother, while winger Mostafa Zico received a five-match ban.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) confirmed the sanctions on October 19 and said it had requested detailed explanations from FIFA before assessing its legal options and deciding whether to appeal.

The disciplinary action follows the fallout from Egypt’s dramatic World Cup elimination, during which the Pharaohs surrendered a two-goal lead against Argentina.
Egypt had moved within reach of a historic quarter-final appearance after going 2-0 ahead, but the defending champions mounted a second-half comeback to win 3-2.
The match was marked by disputed refereeing decisions, including a disallowed Egyptian goal and a late penalty appeal. Hossam Hassan and other members of the Egyptian delegation subsequently criticised the officiating, prompting FIFA disciplinary proceedings.

Despite the painful exit, Egypt made history by reaching the knockout stage for the first time at a World Cup. Their campaign included a first-ever World Cup victory over New Zealand and progression beyond the group stage.
The suspensions could now affect Egypt’s upcoming international fixtures, with the Hassan brothers facing potential absences from the November 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Malawi. Zico’s longer ban is expected to keep him out for a wider stretch of the qualifying campaign.
