Bruno Fernandes has defended Cristiano Ronaldo’s place in Portuguese football, insisting the forward remains the country’s greatest sporting symbol despite leaving the national team camp this week.
Ronaldo, 41, departed the squad after learning he would not start Portugal’s Nations League match against Denmark, which they won 4-2 without him.
Speaking at a news conference on Saturday, Fernandes said he had spoken to his former Manchester United team-mate and urged the country not to allow the situation to create divisions.
“Regardless of what happens, Cristiano Ronaldo will never cease to be the greatest symbol of our national team, of our football, and of the country, for what he has done not only in Portugal but throughout the world,” Fernandes said.
He added that Ronaldo deserved respect from all Portuguese people, regardless of their personal opinions about him.
“There are no divisions in the national team. It is one and will remain so, despite any noise that may come from outside,” Fernandes said.
Ronaldo holds Portugal’s records for both appearances and goals, with 234 caps and 146 goals. He helped the country win Euro 2016 and has lifted the Nations League twice.
His international future is now uncertain following his latest departure from the squad.
Portugal coach Jorge Jesus, who previously managed Ronaldo at Saudi club Al-Nassr, took charge of the national team after Roberto Martinez’s departure.
Ronaldo played 67 minutes in Portugal’s opening 1-0 win over Wales but was an unused substitute in their 2-1 victory away to Norway before leaving ahead of the Denmark fixture.
Fernandes called on the Portuguese public to avoid taking sides in the controversy, saying Ronaldo would always hold a special place in the country’s football history.
