Co-founder of Spintex Knights Basketball Club, Dr. Eric Opoku-Antwi, says the club is awaiting a response from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation on a promise to provide financial support for its Basketball Africa League (BAL) campaign.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports, Dr. Opoku-Antwi said the club still faced significant financial challenges after qualifying for the Elite 16 stage of the continental competition.
Spintex Knights remain in Libya over outstanding travel costs, with the club initially needing almost $33,000 to cover flight tickets and visa-on-arrival charges.
Dr. Opoku-Antwi disclosed that benevolent individuals had since helped the club settle the $3,000 debt owed for visa-on-arrival charges following reports of the team’s predicament.

“When we are setting out for things like that (BAL), we write not only to the (Sports) Ministry but we also write to corporate Ghana for support so that is what we did before we moved out.”

“With respect to the Ministry, they said they will help and they were putting something concrete together, we are yet to hear from them” Dr. Opoku-Antwi said at the time of writing.

Spintex Knights won all three of their games in the BAL Division West group phase to qualify for the Elite 16, scheduled for November 10 to 15 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
