Spintex Knights co-founder Dr Eric Opoku-Antwi says the club is considering withdrawing from the Basketball Africa League (BAL) Elite 16 stage because of financial difficulties.
He said the possibility was being considered amid mounting debts from the club’s participation in continental competition over the past three years.
The Knights won all three games in the Division West group stage in Tripoli, Libya, to qualify for the Elite 16 as Ghana’s sole representative.
However, a lack of financial support has left the team stranded in Libya, with outstanding flight costs estimated at $33,000, raising concerns about how the club will finance its return to Ghana and participation in the next stage.
“One of the things, as a group, we are thinking about is that if year by year we keep on adding debt to our accounts and within the year we clear it then add another debt.”

“It’s an idea we are flirting with that probably the Elite 16 we have to pull out.”

“With support from my church and my family and my friends around, we’ve been able to do this, how long can we continue to do this just for mother Ghana how long?” Dr. Opoku-Antwi said.
