Former Hearts of Oak captain Lawrence Adjah-Tetteh believes home-based players could strengthen the Black Stars ahead of Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against Somalia.
However, he says the final decision must rest with the technical team, which should select players who fit its playing philosophy.
Ghana are looking to revive their qualifying campaign after losing their opening two matches in Group C.
Adjah-Tetteh, who featured in the Black Stars team that fielded an entirely Hearts of Oak-based starting XI against Nigeria in a 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifier, believes a combination of local and foreign-based players would give Ghana a stronger squad.
On March 11, 2001, Ghana held Nigeria to a goalless draw in Accra, with coach Jones Attuquayefio selecting all 11 starters from Hearts of Oak.
Speaking to Citi Sports on the sidelines of the launch of the Kivo U-17 Colts Regional Champions Cup, Adjah-Tetteh urged supporters to trust the interim technical team to make the right selections.
He expressed confidence in the experience of Kim Lars Björkegren, Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram, backing them to guide Ghana to qualification.
“I think when we blend local and foreign-based players, it will be okay. It depends on the coach. He will identify the players who can fit into the team. We should allow him to come in and select his players so that we can have a better team.
“We want a win for the Black Stars to qualify. We can beat Somalia, and we should give the team maximum support.
“I have confidence in Godwin Attram and Ibrahim Tanko because they are former players and have the experience. They can do it. I believe we can win and even qualify,” he said.
Ghana will host Somalia on Thursday, November 12 at the Essipong Sports Stadium in Sekondi before the return fixture on November 16 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Black Stars sit bottom of Group C without a point after their opening two defeats, making the double-header crucial to their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 AFCON.
