Full list of new coaches for Ghana’s football teams

Reading Time: 3 mins read

When the Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced that it had dissolved all the technical teams of the national teams, it paved the way for sweeping changes at the top of the hierarchy of these sides.

Over the last two days, the GFA has rolled out the new technical teams, including the head coaches culminating in the naming of Charles Kwablan Akonnor as new Black Stars boss on Wednesday.

The Black Satellites, Black Meteors and Black Starlets saw new names take charge while some of the other teams, including the Black Queens saw familiar people return.

Here’s a list of the national football teams and the coaches who will lead them:

Black Stars head coach – C.K Akonnor

Akonnor’s tenure with the Black Stars appeared to have ended prematurely when the decision was taken by the GFA to dissolve the technical teams.

The assistant to then-Black Stars boss, Kwesi Appiah, left along with all members of the team but returns, this time in the top job. He will be assisted by David Duncan. The team will be tasked to qualify the Stars to the 2021 AFCON (and maybe win it) as well as the 2022 World Cup.

Black Queens head coach – Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo

Mercy Tagoe returns to lead the women’s senior national team, having been one of those let go in the technical team clearout. It’s another chance for her to improve the lot of the failing Queens.

She led the side at the 2018 AFCON held in Ghana but the side failed to progress from the group after just one win from their three group games. They were also dumped out of the Olympics qualifiers by Kenya.

Black Stars ‘B’ head coach – Ibrahim Tanko

Ibrahim Tanko has seen his hard-earned reputation dip following his stint in charge of the Black Meteors. They missed out on a place at next year’s Olympics as they fell to the Ivory Coast and South Africa on penalties at last year’s AFCON tournament.

He has another chance to show the quality that once took him up to the position of Black Stars assistant coach

The others are…

Black Satellites head coach – Karim Zito

Black Starlets head coach – Ben Fokuo

Black Princesses coach – Yusif Basigi

Black Maidens head coach – Baba Nuhu Mallam

U-15 women’s head coach – Joyce Boatey-Agyei

U-15 men’s head coach – Samuel Boadu
