COVID-19: Swimming excluded as NSA reveals list of 14 ‘non-contact’ sports

Swimming has been excluded in the National Sports Authority’s list of 14 sporting disciplines covered under the “non-contact” sports category of disciplines cleared to return to action following President Akufo-Addo’s address on Sunday that announced further easing of restrictions imposed in the month of March as a measure to curb the spread of coronavirus in Ghana.

The NSA however, stated in a statement that the disciplines cleared to continue their activities will only resume training sessions with competitive sporting events still prohibited.

The exclusion of swimming is especially conspicuous because it is believed the chlorine in the pool kills the coronavirus while swimmers compete in different lanes.

While football was explicitly mentioned as one of the sports not clear to return, other events like boxing have also been affected by the continuous ban on sporting activities that will last till at least July 31, 2020.

However, disciplines such as athletics, golf, tennis, table tennis have all been cleared to return.

Full List of Sporting Disciplines cleared to return:

  1. Athletics
  2. Badminton
  3. Table Tennis
  4. Tennis
  5. Golf
  6. Power Lifting
  7. Weightlifting
  8. Cycling
  9. Draughts
  10. Para Sports (Individual non-contact para sports)
  11. Rowing and Canoeing
  12. Horse Racing
  13. Baseball and Softball
  14. Squash
