‘Complete heartbreak’ – Ghanaians remember Gyan’s penalty miss against Uruguay 10 years on

Reading Time: 1 min read

A continent collectively held their breath, awaiting a kick that would re-write the history books.

No African country had ever reached the quarterfinals of a FIFA World Cup, but Ghana was moments away from changing that narrative.

A last minute penalty had been awarded to Ghana in extra time, and Asamoah Gyan, who has scored two previous spot kicks in the group stages, was the man behind the ball.

He stepped up and missed. The ball hit the crossbar and sailed over. Ghana went on to lose the subsequent penalty shoot and crashed out.

Africa’s dream was shattered, at the first ever tournament hosted in Africa. The date? 2nd July, 2010 – exactly 10 years ago.

Time has passed, but it seems football fans have still not gotten over that incident.

A number of fans have taken to social media to express their displeasure, 10 years on.
