The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif has assured that the facilities for the 2023 Africa Games will be completed and handed over to organisers ahead of time to ensure the smooth running of the continental showpiece.

With eight months left, there have been doubts over Ghana’s ability to host the competition as many infrastructural works are still ongoing.

The two sites for the competition – Borteyman and University of Ghana – are still under construction.

Together with the media, the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the 2023 Africa Games, the Sports Ministry and the office of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, went on a tour to inspect the works done so far.

The tour, which happened at the University of Ghana,, saw journalists, the LOC for the games, the Sports Minister and his deputy, and engineers inspect the facilities on campus to ensure work is in progress ahead of the games which will happen in March 2024.

The tour, which started at the Rugby Field, ended at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium. The key stakeholders were given a breakdown of what has been done so far and what to expect in the next few months.

From the rugby field where stakeholders were shown the media room, VIP section and closets, everyone was then taken to the Dome Site, which comprises a canteen, a 10-bed clinic, kitchen and generator set.

The team then inspected the halls in which air conditioners had been fixed, spoilt doors changed, washrooms transformed and beds replaced.

The group was taken to the sports stadium where the engineers showed work done on the training centre, which was some five metres away from the stadium.

The grass in the main stadium was also inspected before the tour ended with a media briefing on the objectives being targeted

Speaking in an interview with Citi Sports, the Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif said Ghana is on track and will be in the capacity to host the African continent in March 2024.

Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana also expressed her joy in seeing the massive works done on the campus and explained how the games will not affect the academic calendar of the school.

The LOC chairman, Dr. Kwaku Ofosu Asare then encouraged the media to report the positive works done to ginger Ghanaians to patronize the competition and show up in their numbers when the time comes.
