“We are deceiving ourselves with the handling of the local league” – Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye

Former Sports Minister, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye says he is very unhappy with the lack of quality in the Ghana Premier League.

The Ododiodoo MP is very displeased with the state of the league and Ghanaian football and he believes that a lot must be done to improve the situation.

He told Citi Sports in an interview that Ghana had fallen behind other countries on the continent and this was seen in the recent results the Black Stars have picked up against teams that were usually considered as minnows and less-talented.

“We are deceiving ourselves that we are playing a league, but we are not. I go and sit there and watch a match and I ask myself whether, it is a colts team playing or division three.”

They are nowhere  near the premier league teams, quality, very poor, the players, substandard, we must do something about the local league.”

Former Sports Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye

“If we continue to let every player just leave, we may not have good quality players in the local league and our league will be substandard. Look, today, compare our league with even the Ethiopian league, the Tanzanian league, the Zambian league, there’s a huge difference, that’s the reason why these teams are beating us now.

Ghana is going to play Comoros, and we are shaking, we are going to play Equatorial Guinea and we are shaking, Cape Verde, we are shaking, how can these countries scare Ghana in any football tournament at any level? Today we are scared.”

Ghana representatives have struggled in CAF inter Club competitions due to their inability to match up with the level of other teams from other parts of the continent.

Medeama SC and Dreams FC will represent the country at this year’s CAF Inter Club Competitions with the objective to qualify to the money zone of the competitions.

Medeama is up against Remo Stars of Nigeria on Sunday, August 20 at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium in the first leg of the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.

Dreams FC, on the other hand, will face Guinean side Milo FC on Saturday, August 19 in Conakry for the first leg of the CAF Confederations Cup.
