On Saturday, 6th September 2025, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, joined thousands of athletes and fitness enthusiasts at the Black Star Square to mark the 10th edition of the Millennium Marathon — a flagship event celebrating a decade of promoting fitness, unity, and grassroots athletic development in Ghana.
The Minister, who delivered the opening address, had the honour of serving as Start Referee, ceremonially flagging off the 5km and 21km races that coursed through the heart of Accra.

His presence underscored the government’s ongoing commitment to preventive health, youth empowerment, and sports tourism.
In his keynote remarks, Adams praised the remarkable growth of the Millennium Marathon since its inception in 2015, celebrating its international recognition and lasting impact.
He commended the organisers for their resilience and vision in building a platform that has promoted healthy living while unearthing talents such as William Amponsah, whose journey from a local participant to a silver medalist at the African Games exemplifies the potential of Ghanaian athletes when given structured opportunities and support.
He also challenged organisers and stakeholders to expand the marathon’s reach nationwide to encourage broader participation and deeper community engagement.
Reinforcing the government’s renewed focus on sports as a driver of development, the Minister highlighted key priorities such as the revival of school sports, investment in infrastructure, and the establishment of a School Sports Agency.
He emphasised that sports must be recognised as a catalyst for youth empowerment, job creation, and economic growth — fully integrated into Ghana’s national development strategy.
Adams further used the platform to announce the forthcoming launch of the National Recreation and Wellness Programme, scheduled for later this month.
The initiative seeks to institutionalise monthly fitness activities across all regions, promoting wellness, eco-tourism, and community bonding.
The 10th Millennium Marathon, he said, is not only a milestone celebration but also a powerful prelude to this broader vision — affirming that wellness is both a personal responsibility and a national priority.
