Liverpool have progressed to the next round of the 2025-2026 season of the Carabao Cup after registering a straight forward 2-1 win over Southampton at Anfield.

The Reds off-season signings continue to impress as strikers Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak scored in the win. Isak’s goal came in the 43rd minute after he swept home a pass from Federico Chiesa.

The Italian intercepted a pass from Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and laid the ball on for the Swede to bag a simple finish. The goal is Isak’s first since joining Liverpool from Newcastle United for a record £125 million.

The game against Southampton also marked his first start for Liverpool as he works his way to full fitness; he recently made his debut for The Reds.

Southampton’s Shea Charles equalised in the 76th minute but Chiesa was the provider again as he found Ekitike for a tap-in. However, there was drama to follow as Ekitike celebrated his goal by taking off his jersey.

That got him shown a second yellow card and handed his marching orders. He will miss Liverpool’s league game against Crystal Palace on Saturday, September 27 at 14:00 GMT.
