There were less distractions in Ghana’s World Cup Qualifiers than AFCON Qualifiers- Otto Addo

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has pointed out the reasons behind Ghana’s successful campaign in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers that ended in Ghana progressing to next year’s tournament compared to the nation’s flawed campaign in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

Under Otto Addo, Ghana failed to qualify to the AFCON for the first time in 20 years on the back of playing out a winless run in the qualifiers.

However, under the same man, Ghana won all 2026 World Cup qualifiers bar a shock 1-1 draw with Chad to top Group I in the qualifiers.

Speaking after Ghana’s 1-0 win over Comoros that officially sealed the nation’s qualification to next year’s World Cup, Otto spoke about what was different between the two campaigns.

“To say it very simply, we scored more goals [in the World Cup qualifiers than the AFCON qualifiers], we were more matured, we were more clinical in our finishes.”

“There were less distractions also…but I do think we’ve now come together as a united team. If you have unity, everything is easy” Otto Addo said.
