Argentine football star Lionel Messi has solidified his stance as the greatest player of all time by leading Inter Miami to clinch its first ever Major League Soccer (MLS) title which represents the 48th title for the legend.
Messi played an inspiring role in Miami’s 3-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps as he registered two assists on goals from fellow Argentines Rodrigo De Paul and Tadeo Allende. Allende scored a hat-trick in Inter Miami’s triumph in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Messi’s brace of assists takes his tally to 407 in his career which increases his lead over Ferenc Puskas (404 assists) in the all time rankings. An assist in the Eastern Conference Finals pushed Messi into first place.
Speaking after the game according to ESPN, Messi pointed the title triumph as a “beautiful emotional moment”.
“A beautiful, emotional moment for us, for the people of Miami, to be able to achieve the MLS objective. It’s a very new club, so to speak…this was the real objective, to win MLS and be at the top of the American league, and luckily we achieved it…so we have to enjoy it”.
The final whistle sparked scenes of jubilation particularly in the direction of Messi and his former FC Barcelona teammates Jordi Alba, Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets who have been his teammate at Inter Miami in recent years.
Alba and Busquets are set to retire from playing professional football in the coming days after announcing their departure once the season concludes.
