South Africa striker Lyle Foster scored the winning goal in South Africa’s opening game at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco and named as the Man of the Match.

The Burnley player converted a fine finish in the 79th minute to give South Africa a 2-1 win over Angola in Group B’s opening game of the tournament.

Foster was the provider for South Africa’s first goal as he assisted Oswin Apollis’ goal in the 21st minute en route to winning the Man of the Match Award.

Speaking in a post-game interview according to SABC Sport, Foster said he was pleased with the individual award but more pleased about the win.

“It’s a nice trophy [MOTM award] but most importantly we needed the three points today.”

“Tough first half. I think we started the game well, afterwards we grew into it. So, we had to be very hard at half-time to be honest with ourselves. Second half we came out, I think we showed a different team, we got the winning goal. Thank God. Happy now, now we move on to the next one” he said.
