Algeria booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after substitute Adil Boulbina struck a stunning late winner to sink DR Congo in Rabat.

With penalties looming in a tense and low-key last-16 encounter, Boulbina produced a moment of quality in the 119th minute, firing home a brilliant strike to seal a 1–0 victory and spark wild celebrations among the Algerian players and supporters.

The contest had been evenly balanced for long spells, with clear chances at a premium across 120 minutes. DR Congo defended resolutely and came close to forcing a shoot-out, but were ultimately undone by a lapse late in extra time.

Algeria, who dominated possession but struggled to break down a stubborn Congolese side, showed greater urgency in extra time, with goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi called into action on several occasions before Boulbina’s decisive intervention.

DR Congo were left heartbroken after pushing the former champions all the way, earning applause from their supporters at the final whistle.

Algeria will now face Nigeria in the quarter-finals on Saturday, with coach Vladimir Petkovic’s side knowing they will need to raise their level against the Super Eagles, who arrive well-rested after a convincing last-16 win.
