Board Chairman of Medeama Sporting Club, Dr Tony Aubynn, says managing a football club in the Ghana Premier League is far from straightforward, despite success on the pitch.

His comments come at a time when Medeama SC sit top of the 2025/26 GPL table with 37 points, underlining a strong campaign so far.

Speaking exclusively to Citi Sports, Dr Aubynn explained that behind the results lies a demanding and often overlooked administrative burden.

“It is not very easy. It is not easy management because you need the resources, he said.

Dr Aubynn revealed that Medeama currently cater for close to 40 players;  a mix of experienced footballers and young talents still finding their feet.

Some of them have played for Hearts of Oak, some for Kotoko and other clubs, and some are just starting out. You need to take good care of them. They need a good place to stay, food to eat, and you must ensure that their salaries are paid every month.

He added that performance-related incentives also come with pressure.

When they win, their bonuses have to be paid on time. That is the challenge of managing football in this country.

The Medeama chairman further highlighted the instability of sponsorship in Ghanaian football, noting that even clubs considered fortunate are not immune.

Sometimes you don’t have people supporting you. You don’t have sponsorship. Medeama has been a bit lucky, but even then, sponsorship can fizzle out and you have to struggle.

Despite the challenges, Dr Aubynn stressed the importance of having the right people in leadership positions to keep a club competitive and stable.

As the title race intensifies, Medeama SC remain firmly in the spotlight not just for their performances on the pitch, but for how well they can sustain success behind the scenes.
