South Africa and Botswana are interested in launching a joint bid to co-host the 2028 AFCON according to multiple reports stemming from a CAF Executive Committee meeting held earlier today in Rabat, Morocco.
The reported interest from the two Southern African nations comes ahead of the final of the 2025 AFCON between Senegal and Morocco.
Morocco are aiming to win the AFCON title for the second time in their history and are playing in the AFCON final for the first time since 2004. Senegal won the AFCON for the first time in 2021.
This year’s AFCON is taking place in Morocco with the 2027 edition scheduled to be held in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania in a three nation co-host event.
The 2028 AFCON will be the last edition to be held before the start of a new hosting cycle for Africa’s premier competition kicks in.

Beyond the 2028 edition, the competition will be held after every four years replacing the two year hosting cycle in use as part of changes by Africa’s football governing body to synchronize the continent’s calendar with that of FIFA’s.

Botswana exited the 2025 AFCON at the group stage while South Africa crashed out of the tournament after a 2-1 loss to Cameroon at the round of 16 stage.
