Ghana Football Association Executive Council member Gideon Fosu says the GFA is in talks to appoint the next head coach of the Black Stars.

The development follows reports that negotiations with Carlos Queiroz over a possible contract extension have broken down.

Queiroz, who was appointed in April on a short term deal, led Ghana to the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America after taking over from Otto Addo.

The 73-year-old Portuguese coach, who has previously managed Iran and Egypt, was reportedly earning $80,000 a month, according to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams.

However, talks over extending his contract are said to have stalled after Queiroz requested an increase in his salary. He is also reported to have asked for more foreign members to be added to his technical team as part of his plans to maintain continuity with the Black Stars.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Gideon Fosu confirmed that negotiations are ongoing but insisted the Black Stars will have a coach in place before their next competitive fixtures.

“I think what’s there for Ghanaians to know is that we’ll definitely play Senegal and we have to play the qualifiers, right? What I can say on authority is that we are definitely going to have a coach who is in charge of the team.

“We are still talking, we are still negotiating. I am sure that at the right time, the president of the FA will announce who the next coach of the Black Stars would be.”

The Black Stars are expected to return to competitive action in September when they begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Ghana missed the previous edition of the tournament in Morocco and have been drawn in Group C for the next qualifiers alongside West African rivals Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia and Somalia.

With the qualifiers approaching, the GFA will be keen to settle the uncertainty over the team’s technical leadership and appoint a coach who can steer the Black Stars through the campaign.
