The dream matchup between defending Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka and big favourite Coco Gauff is over.
The much anticipated match involving two of the best players in the women’s division failed to materialize after Coco Gauff got demolished by Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals.
Gauff, bidding to win her first ever Australian Open title, lost 6-1, 6-2 to the Ukrainian who was in brilliant form in the quarterfinal matchup.
On the flip side, Sabalenka scored a similar big win over Iva Jovic with a 6-3, 6-0 win in her matchup to move closer to win a third Aussie Open title in a row.
Speaking after beating Coco Gauff to move back into the top 10 in the world rankings, Svitolina said,
“I’m very pleased with the tournament so far. After maternity leave, it was my dream to come back into the Top 10. It means the world to me.”

“I try to push myself I try to give myself this motivation to continue and I’m very pleased with the performance at this tournament.”

Svitolina takes on Sabalenka in the semifinals on Thursday, January 29.
